African Iris

Where I work there’s are two atria, one at the front entrance and the other at the back (employees) entrance to the building. The only plants in either atrium are several very broad and tall clumps of long, spiky green leaves. They are called African Iris, or the Fortnight Lily. The blooms start in late Spring and go well into the Summer. Here’s a close-up of a fresh bloom I took today as I was leaving for the long ride home. (The natural lighting was quite nice so other than a little cropping and a bit of sharpening after reducing the size for the blog, the shot is as the camera captured it.)

Distracted by an arachnid

The May roses are right on time here in Northern California, and this year ours are particularly nice. Being my Friday off, this morning I grabbed the G11 and headed out into the yard to snap some close-up shots of the lovely yellow floribundas. I saw this spider basking in the warm sunlight so I moved in for a closer look. Instead of a shot of a perfect yellow rose, here’s what I got.

I thought the original, full frame of the image above was OK, but I cropped off a bit of the extraneous edge details to make a better picture (hence the square format). For fun, the image below is a 100% crop of the same shot.

The high life

On warm(ish), lazy weekend afternoons we like to sit out on the patio and have Micheladas (aka cerveza preparada). There are all kinds of different recipes for the drink, but we prefer vegetable (like an organic V8) to straight tomato juice. And no Worcestershire sauce for me. Miller High Life is our beer of choice because the Michelada tastes best when made with a light lager–snappy ales and dark beers are better straight up.

Sunday laundry

Two personal things: I do my own laundry and we don’t have a dryer. When the dryer finally wore out several years back we decided to make do without. We got some solar dryers (aka, a clothes line and a wood rack) and never looked back. When it’s raining, we rack dry in the house. The rest of the time it’s solar all the way. And, what can I say, I like doing my own laundry. Here’s a shot of the last load of the day just before I brought it in.
