Contrasting views

This time of year can be very contrasty. With the sun low in the sky and setting early, during the commute home it’s either in my eyes, beating against the side of my head, or disappearing behind hill–I’m constantly moving my sunglasses from my eyes to my head and back to my eyes. Here’s a “sunglasses off” view from Fort Baker just as the sun was dropping behind the hill.

And looking south from the same spot where I was standing to take the above photo, here’s an old timey postcard view of the Golden Gate Bridge (I’m obviously having fun with Nik Silver Efex Pro).

Toning and vignette

Back to the commute today. I stopped near the end of the ride home and took several shots of a very bald green hill. The two oaks were the only trees for hundreds of yard in either direction, and there were several turkey vultures circling fairly low to the ground. When I got the images into my computer I decided to make a style in Niks Silver Efex Pro and apply it to the three images I chose. Here’s the series.

Adventure with the Golden Boy

Happy New Year!

On our way back west during the Canadian train trip we had a several hour layover in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Winnipeg is a lovely city and the Manitoba Legislative Building is a must see if you’re ever there. Perched atop the structure is the Golden Boy. Unfortunately, the G11 zoom doesn’t have the reach to get up close and personal with the impressive statue, so I had to settle for jaunty shots of the edifice. I like this one.

It has the look of an HDR image, but this is a single shot straight out of the camera with black and white tweaking done in Nik Silver Efex Pro.

Night on the town

Last night Mags and I hoofed it downtown to see a movie (the Coen brothers “True Grit”–great flick!). I brought my G11 just for some added fun. After the movie we stopped in at the local watering hole and had a pint then walked around town with me click click clicking before hoofing it back to the homestead.

This is the corner of Western and Kentucky on a sleepy Thursday night:
